Here's the latest dose of Interview ramblings with Ultimate Rockerz's Trashbrat13 and the Guitarist Dennis Post from Star*Rats.
Currently on Tour and work on the 4th album in production, these guys are making major waves in the world and are surely gonna be a band to follow if you don't already.
We'd like to say thanks again to Danny and good luck in the future. Sit back and enjoy the interview....
Trashbrat13: I figured we could kick things off with some band history for those people who need educating on the awesomeness that is Star*Rats. How did you guys meet and when did you form the band?
Dennis Post (DP):
I met our bassplayer Kass back in 2001 when I joined a danish glam/AOR'ish band called Push. After 2 months the band broke up because the singer was a dick & we started doing the stuff on our own that would eventually become Star*Rats. We did a few replacements here and there & ended up with a pretty sweet bunch of cool cats being me, Kass, Nico, who left & joined Artillery in 2007 & was replaced superbly by Magnus, & Braun who left in the beginning of 2010 after a drunken bike accident that busted his shoulder & was equally superbly replaced by Jens B. I'm sorry if I'm not going to greater depths with this, but I'm unbelievably bored with this same ol' fuckin' story;-)
Trashbrat13: So, lets meet the band! Who does what musically and what qualities does each member bring to the table?
DP: It's a collabration between everybody. Magnus mostly does lyrics as well as work on visuals of booklets, posters, t-shirts,etc, I tend to write the most music, management, gig/tour booking, do interviews;-), Kass both writes & takes care of accounting + he also owns a studio so he's by far the most productive recording technician, & Jens is doing myspace/Facebook + printing matters like posters & postcards + he helps me out with tourplanning & Promotion... We're not locked on our stations though.. anybody can fill in for a fellow Rat at anytime, which also happens quite often. Tons of very non-Rock'n Roll shit that is essential to live the dream;-) This is also excatly why most bands fall flat on their noses.. they Can't seem to organize shit or pull their heads outta their asses..
Trashbrat13: Would you class yourselves as any particular genre of music? Who and what are you main influences and from where do you draw your inspiration for song writing?
DP: We just call it Rock, but the correct term would probably be Sleaze/punk/thrash/metal/glitter/garage/industrial/shred/action/country/rock'n roll;-)
We all like different bands & genres and we're not music snobs so whether it's Pantera, Machine Head, Social Distortion, Bon Jovi or fuckin' Lady Gaga that inspires a song, it's all good to us. We've been doing this for so long now, we just do a song and get on with the next one... kinda like The Ramones..
Trashbrat13: You have released three albums to date (Broken Halo-2004, Rebelution-2006, Screw The Consequences-2009) How would you say you have evolved musically since your first release?
DP: I think everybody should buy a copy of each & be the judges of that themselves;-) "Screw The Consequences does" have a sleazier action rock vibe to it since Magnus' voice shaded things in that direction & we totally embraced that. The first album had a slight heavy metal Dio kinda vibe since Nico is that kinda singer, & the 2nd was sort of our "St. Anger"... Bottomline: 1st was good, 2nd was better, & the 3rd is lightyears ahead of the others.
Trashbrat13: Can you talk us through 'Screw the Consequences' track by track and give us some insight into the meaning behind each song?
DP: I want people to make their own interpetation of it so I'm not going to;)
Trashbrat13: I understand you are currently in the process of writing a new album? How's it coming along? Is there anything you can tell us about it yet?
DP: It's turning out slammin'!! We recorded everything but vox & bass so there's light at the end of the tunnel. Soren Andersen the guitarplayer from Glenn Hughes' band, helped us getting started with mike settings'n shit & will probably mix it as well. Musically we don't stray too much from "STC", but there's way more variation kinda like on Slash' solo album. A little Rock, a little punk, a little glitter pop, a little thrash metal, etc. Can't wait to wrap it up and get it out!
Trashbrat13: You won The Peoples Choice Award for Best Live Band at the Danish Metal Awards last year..thats pretty awesome stuff huh?? How did you feel about that? tell us about the award night...oh, and by the way...how's your foot now? ;)
DP: Well, we only went 'cause we got invited for free with an "all you can drink" pass + the guys arranging it are very cool cats & most of our friends were there partying too. We didn't even consider the possibility of winning to be an option but what the hell did we know?:) The cool thing about that is that it was the people & not some fuckin' jury that decided we should win. That's also why we threw the award into the audience... It was only fair since they made it happen.
In general I hate these things... I wear my trophees on the inside & don't need a pack of selfproclaimed music gurus to stroke my ego. My brothers'n sisters around the world showing us love & support is worth a million times more to me! Nothing is as humbling as meeting peeps that cares so much about the band they got it inked on their skin, & there's a lot of them.. Holy Shit! Better cut down on the Valient Thorr ;D
Trashbrat13: Talking of live shows, you have toured with some big names, including Skid Row, Alice Cooper, Britny Fox, Dokken, Vains of Jenna ..the list is huge! Who were the coolest guys to play/ hang out with? Which other bands would you most like to tour with?
DP: I think most of them were fun but If I have to pick 2 it would be Vains Of Jenna & Zodiac Mindwarp. Warrior Soul & Alice Cooper were also very special to me since I've been a fan of both forever! Britny Fox can definitely go fuck themselves!! I qoute their singer "We sold platinum in the 80's so We're not opening for a fuckin' swedish cover band" (that would be us). Guess who opened for that fuckin' swedish cover band 3 hours later haha!! pussies..:)
Trashbrat13: Do you have any upcoming tours in the pipeline?
DP: Yeah! we're starting our European tour with Tracy Gang Pussy on feb 3rd hitting France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, & Denmark & also, we'll be hitting the UK on april 1st for a 10 date tour with Falling Red & Velvet Star. Check out our myspace profile for the complete tourplan & make sure to be at the gig if you're anywhere near:)
Trashbrat13: Will that be your first visit to the UK? Do you have any plans to tour further afield later in the year, eg USA?
DP: Hell yeah! When we come back from UK we have an album to finish & after that Planning for the US will start. Then we'll most likely hit Europe again & We'll probably be hitting Finland with Tracy Gang Pussy in the late summer... oh, to answer your other question we did play at the Marquee club in 2005 -6'ish :)
Trashbrat13: What can fans expect when coming to see a Star*Rats show?
DP: Well, If you ever wondered what it would feel like to get a nuke punched through your skull, come on down & find out ;)
Trashbrat13: Are there any particular songs you most enjoy playing live? Any reasons for this?
DP: My favorites right now are probably Boozehound & Psycho You but that constantly changes... I really enjoy doing a coversong or two as well.. love playing Brand new hate by Backyard Babies.
Trashbrat13: On to one of my favourite questions now (and I have a sneaky suspicion you're not gonna disappoint here...) Do you have any on the road tales of drunkeness, debauchery or disaster you would care to share? ;)
DP: We're pretty much a walking disaster on that account & it's hard to tell them apart but I do recall 2 in particular where I broke shit. First one was when I was in the middle of recording lead guitar for our first album & I went to the opening of Copenhagen skatepark in the evening. I got loaded and decided I was probably fit to skate Scandinavias biggest halfpipe. I ended up in the hospital with 2 broken arms & we had to postphone the album for 4 months:)
The other one was when we went to the Danish Metal awards. I don't actually remember anything but I got 9 titanium screws in my left foot to prove I was there:D Also, Magnus jumped Jesper Binzer from DAD and kissed him on the mouth on stage..haha! Good times :)
Trashbrat13: Can you talk to us about the shooting of your 2009 video 'Boozehound' ? Do you have any behind the scenes tid bits or random facts you want to tell us?
DP: That was fun! We invited our best and hardest drinkin' mates to the studio, bought 540 bottles of beer & 12 bottles of Jagermeister, drank for 2 hours, and started filming. The result speaks for itself I guess & nobody was fakin' anything:-) The behind the scenes stuff is rediculous and there's hours of it. I accidently broke a Hagström guitar from falling over piss drunk and landing on the neck which is why I play two different guitars in the video :-)
Trashbrat13: How would you say the internet affects you as a band? For example, I imagine it must be a fantastic tool in aiding promotion etc, but on the flip side of the coin, you gotta be losing out on album sales due to illegal downloading?
DP: We haven't been around since 1972 so we only know this shit the way it is now, but I don't see it as a threat since you can easily get out to people with the internet. Album sales for us has always gone up regardless of how many sites posted our albums for illegal download... that said, I don't support illegal downloads and don't practise it myself. I think It's human nature to cherish something you worked for more than something you got for free. Then again, I don't give a shit what others do as long as they show up for the shows and buys our t-shirts :-)
Trashbrat13: What do you think you would be doing if you were NOT in the music industry?
DP: Rocket scientist!!
Trashbrat13: What do you anticipate 2011 having in store for you guys?
What is your overall vision for Star*Rats?
DP: Dominate!!! We're gonna release a new album called "White Trash Presidents", & as I already
told you we'll be touring mad starting in Europe with Tracy Gang Pussy in Feburary & hitting the UK
in March with Falling Red & Velvet Star so We're pretty stoked about 2011 so far..
Trashbrat13: What have been your personal highest and lowest points in your career so far?
DP: Don't really know to be honest?... Everything goes up'n down from time to time from us wanting
to kill eachother to being head over heels in love. Despite all the awesome stuff we've experienced
over the years I think the highest point would be right now! Feeling indestructible with the music &
show to back it up isn't bad at all!! :-)
Trashbrat13: As a band, you work pretty fuckin' hard!! what kinda stuff do you do to kick back and
relax?
DP: Question not understood??? ;)
Trashbrat13: In closing, is there anything you want to add, or anything you want to say to your fans
reading this?
DP: Love you mad & hope to see every fuckin' one of you on the road in 2011!
